To no one’s surprise, CBC had a huge Monday night. From a CBC press release –
MILLIONS TUNE IN TO SEE SIDNEY CROSBY’S RETURN ON A SPECIAL MONDAY NIGHT EDITION OF CBC’S HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA
More than 5.7 million Canadians watched at least part of last night’s game
Sidney Crosby made his highly anticipated return to the NHL last night when his Pittsburgh Penguins took on the New York Islanders on a special Monday edition of CBC’S HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA in front of an average audience of 1.2 million viewers.
Ratings data from the Bureau of Broadcast Measurement (BBM) show the game had a total English TV audience share of 14.1 per cent, reaching more than 5.7 million Canadians. Audience numbers peaked at 7:18 pm ET with 1.55 million viewers, as Crosby scored the game’s first goal at 5:24 of the first period on his first shot of the season.
Crosby finished the game with two goals and two assists for four points en route to a lopsided 5-0 Pittsburgh win over the New York Islanders. Prior to last night, the Penguins captain – a former league MVP and perennial all-star – had missed 61-consecutive regular-season games due to a concussion he suffered in a game on January 5, 2011.
