Kamal & Oake Join CJOB in Winnipeg

Another one of the Atlanta Thrashers broadcasters has found a job. Yesterday, Matt McConnell was named the voice of the Phoenix Coyotes. Today, we have word that radio play by play man Dan Kamal is headed to cover the Winnipeg Jets in a natural transition. The bad news for Kamal is that he won’t be calling any Jets games. Instead, he’s going to CJOB-AM as a Jets reporter and he will be a part of their pre-game and post-game shows. Curiously, Kamal will still be based in Atlanta and will only be an site reporter for Jets road games.

CJOB has also announced that CBC’s Scott Oake will be a part of their Jets coverage. Oake will not be leaving CBC as this will be a side job for the Hockey Night in Canada reporter. Oake currently lives in Winnipeg and got his television start with CBC’s Winnipeg affiliate.

CJOB was the longtime rights holder of the Manitoba Moose before losing out on Jets games to Bell Media and TSN’s Sports Radio 1290.

Steve Cangialosi Expected to Replace Doc In NJ

Put this in the no big surprise department. Devils beat writer Tom Gulitti is reporting that Steve Cangialosi will be hired by MSG to take over for Mike Emrick as the voice of the Devils. This comes as no surprise as Cangialosi had already been Doc’s fill in the last couple of seasons and had gotten progressively better. Cangialosi was the host for Devils games and that role is expected to be handled by Deb Placey for the upcoming season which would leave the Islanders without a host and reporter for the time being. Chico Resch will return as the Devils color analyst.

Scott Morrison To Join Rogers Sportsnet

Rogers Sportsnet continues to shake things up on their hockey coverage. Their latest addition is Scott Morrison. Morrison leaves CBC and Hockey Night in Canada after working there for five years. He was best known as co-host of the I-desk segments with Jeff Marek whom also joined RSN during the off-season.

Morrison’s role will be a little different at Rogers compared to his time at CBC.
Morrison will be the new Executive Producer of Hockey at Rogers. While much of his job will be behind the scenes, he’ll still have an on air presence. Morrison will appear on Sportsnet’s Hockey Central show as an insider. He will also show up on the Rogers radio stations Fan 590 and Fan 560. He will be a regular writer for the new Sportsnet Magazine and Sportsnet.ca.

This is Morrison’s second stint with Sportsnet as he first joined the network in 2001 as the channel’s executive in charge of hockey and news. He started his career as a writer with the Toronto Star in 1979 and was honored by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006.

CBC’s future plans for the I-desk is unknown. Morrison often showed up on HNIC Radio along with host and I-desk partner Marek. A new host for HNIC Radio is expected to be announced soon.
